*Please be a courteous pilot and avoid flight over shore & town!*
Weather
Green Bay FSS, 122.5, (800) 992-7433. AWOS, 128.325, (906) 847-3778. Pan Am Weather, (906) 847-6040.
Fuel
Fuel is not available on the island, however Great Lakes Air in St. Ignace has fuel at reasonable prices. You can call them on Unicom as you jump across the pond and they'll meet you at the pumps. Fuel pump is in the NORTHEAST corner at St. Ignace next to the new hanger and terminal building, not at the old terminal building. Prices are reasonable!
Pellston also has fuel and is a good alternative.
Landing
Mackinac Island Airport gives the pilot a fun landing. With the wind coming from the west, you'll land on 26. Make sure downwind is made over the harbor, not over the island. Base is uneventful, than as you turn Final and come over the shoreline, the chop begins. The breeze/wind comes up the slope and churns over the trees, making for a bumpy ride. The runway slopes up at the middle, so this extra challenge will test your mettle on landing. Our preference is to carry a little speed and not use the last detent of flaps, touching down on the upslope and letting gravity help slow us down.

With the wind from the east, the approach to Runway 08 is a picture as the runway opens in front of you. This is because it goes uphill! This is a steeper incline than what you're facing on 26. Typically winds don't churn as much, but the descent and flare must be done right, or you'll get a nice bounce that will entertain the other pilots!

Notes
Be sure and use your radio and announce your position! Great Lakes Air has a lot of air taxi flights, sometimes running two flights at a time. The airport hosts King Airs and little jets and Bonanzas and twins, sometimes a helicopter or two, all making for a busy pattern in peak seasons. Follow the established FAA procedures, please.
Saint Ignace (Mackinac County) is on the same frequency. Once again, please announce your intentions and report your position as your fly in. In the summer months traffic can be quite high, with twins, turbines, the occasional jet and governor's helicopter in the pattern. We had occassion to land before and take off after the Guv, so pay attention to aircraft and wake turbulence!
